THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
[Don] Sabo, 62, works out of the Center for Research on Physical Activity, Sports & Health at D’Youville College in Buffalo, N.Y. Working closely with the Women’s Sport Foundation, he has authored or co-authored numerous scholarly works regarding youth sports in general, and high-school sports in particular.
“Part of what I do,” Sabo said, “is gather resources to generate nationwide studies — rigorous structural analyses — a picture of the big picture.”
Sabo’s latest study, published last year, is “Go Out and Play: Youth Sports in America.” It tracks and analyzes the nationwide participation rates of girls and boys in exercise and organized team sports.
“Go Out and Play” concludes, in part: “Athletic participation is clearly part of the solution to national public health concerns about overweight children. Sports help children develop not only healthy bodies, but also healthy body images, the latter a basic indicator of mental health. The synergies between sports participation and physical and mental health, moreover, are present among children as early as the middle school years.”
Sabo’s credo is: When sports are done right, they are an asset to a community.
