The Scarlet & Gray Teams are non-select, girls competition team. All girls who have passed the Rising Star level and can demonstrate mastery of the skills at that level are eligible. S&G Team members register every 8 weeks just as they would for any other class. You commit to one eight week session at a time. What is the Scarlet and Gray Team?
The S & G teams train 2-6 hours a week. To some extent you choose how often and how much you want to train. The girls compete within Buckeye Gymnastics and with other local teams in the Central Ohio area. The Greater Columbus Gymnastics Conference (GCGC) offers competition at levels 3-5 and at Prep-Opt for girls who train on similar rec-teams in central Ohio. How Do I Join?Girls register for the S & G teams just like you have always done for the classes you take at Buckeye. Registration information will include class listings for Scarlet and Gray practices. S&G is offered both in Powell and in Westerville. At levels 3 & 4, register for 1 or more classes a week for eight weeks. At levels 5 and pre-opt, two classes a week are required in order to be safe, competent, and competitive. You must be at a Rising or Gym Star level to register for S & G. You register every eight weeks so you can change your schedule and time commitment every two months. What Do The Girls Compete?Gymnastics is not an easy sport. It takes some training to compete at even a beginner level in gymnastics. The girls will train and compete on vaulting, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The sport of gymnastics is governed by USA Gymnastics (USAG). The girls will learn and compete routines developed by USAG. Compulsory Levels: "Compulsory" means "required". The compulsory levels require that the gymnasts all do the same skills and routines. The rationale for these required routines is that the gymnasts are forced to devote time and repetition to the mastery of essential basic skills that are required for long-term success in the sport. The girls will start competing level 3 and then advance to levels 4 & 5. Optional Levels: At the optional levels the gymnasts make up their own routines following guidelines laid down by USA Gymnastics. Prep-Opt (Preparation for Optionals): is an entry level for optional routines. This level is generally reserved for older children (12 and up) who are starting their competitive gymnastics experience for the first time. But younger gymnasts may compete at this level once they master levels 3-5. Scarlet & Gray Competition:The S&G Team will compete 5-7 times a year with most if not all of the competitions held in Central Ohio. The girls are not required to compete. Nor are they required to compete on every event. But if they do decide to take part in a competition they must be currently enrolled in the gym and current with all fees and tuition. Competition begins in the fall and will continue through spring. We begin with inner-squad competitions and progress to out of house competitions. We compete with other gyms that offer this type of program in the Central Ohio area in a League format with a culminating League Championship meet. The focus on the S&G program is on fun. However, we will always keep in mind that the fun of gymnastics lies in the ability to perform ever more difficult gymnastics skills. To that end we will train hard enough to develop the strength, flexibility, and skills necessary to do the gymnastics skills and routines safely and correctly. We will insist on proper form and technique and we will expect the girls to try hard. Should the girls ever want to compete on our USA Gymnastics (select) team or on their middle school or high school teams, the Scarlet and Gray teams will lay a solid foundation for doing so. Uniforms: The S&G girls compete in a Buckeye leotard. We try to keep the same leotard for several years but the apparel companies make this difficult. As a result we have had to switch leotards most years in order to obtain leotards at a reasonable price and in sufficient quantities. The girls need not all have the same leotard and leotards from past years are fine. Many of the girls also order warm-ups and bags, but these are not required. Additional fees are required for competitions. Complete details are available in the office in both Powell and Westerville. |
