What is the Scarlet and Gray Team?

The Scarlet and Gray (S & G) is what we call our recreational gymnastics team. The Scarlet Team trains on Sawmill Road at our Powell location, while the Gray Team trains in Westerville. We offer a recreational team to those who love gymnastics but who do not want the time, financial, and travel commitment required of our traditional competitive team. The S & G teams train 3-6 hours a week. You choose how often and how much you want to train. The girls compete within Buckeye Gymnastics and with other local teams in the Central Ohio area. The Greater Columbus Gymnastics Conference (GCGC) offers competition at levels 3-5 and at Prep-Opt for girls who train on similar rec-teams in the greater Columbus area.

How Do I Join?

Girls register for the S & G teams just like you have always done for classes you take at Buckeye. Registration information will include class listings for Scarlet and Gray practices. Register for 2 or more classes a week for eight weeks. You must be at a Rising or Gym Star level to register for S & G. You register every eight weeks so you can change your schedule and time commitment every two months.

Who Are The Coaches?

The S & G team is under the overall direction of the girl's head coach, Kittia Carpenter. Members of our girl's team coaching staff coach the girls with assistance from our interested and enthusiastic Gym Star teaching staff. Some of our most popular teachers also coach the
S & G team!

What Do The Girls Compete?

Gymnastics is not an easy sport. You cannot simply roll out a ball, choose up, and play a game. It takes some training to compete at even a beginner level in gymnastics. The girls will train and compete on vaulting, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The sport of Gymnastics is governed by USA Gymnastics (USAG). The girls will learn and compete routines developed by USAG.

Compulsory Levels: "Compulsory" means "required". The compulsory levels require that the gymnasts all do the same skills and routines. The rationale for these required routines is so that the gymnasts are forced to devote time and repetition to the mastery of essential basic skills that are required to long term success in the sport. The girls will start competing level 3 and then advance to levels 4 & 5.

Optional Levels: At the optional levels the gymnasts make up their own routiens following exacting general guidelines laid down by USA Gymnastics. Prep-Opt (Preparation Optionals): is an entry level for optional routines. This level is generally reserved for older children (12 and up) who are starting their competitive gymnastics experience for the first time. But younger gymnasts may compete at this level once they master levels 3-5.
